The Finnish Sauna -- A Rejuvenating Tradition

The Finnish sauna is a national tradition. The population of Finland is around five million, and there are approximately two million saunas in the country. That means that almost every home in Finland, no matter how large or small, sports a sauna facility. Saunas are not considered a luxury in Finland, but an important part of everyday life. There are also public saunas where Finnish residents gather to socialize and melt away the tension of the day together.

A Finnish sauna uses a sauna stove featuring hot rocks. When water is added to the hot rocks, a burst of steam fills the room. The temperature can be made hotter by continously adding water to the rocks. The average temperature in a Finnish sauna is anywhere between 80 to 100 degrees. Most people enjoy the sauna for around five to twenty minutes, after which they cool down with a refreshing shower. It's a Finnish custom to enjoy a frosty beer after partaking in a sauna session.

The Finnish are definitely on to something. It's a widely accepted theory that sauna use can be beneficial for the body and mind. The heat of the sauna raises the body's temperature and causes perspiration. This works to not only boost the body's disease fighting mechanisms, it helps flush out impurities and toxins from the body. Examples of these impurities include remnants of pollution, chemicals, food additives, and even toxic heavy metals like mercury. The heat of a sauna can help soothe achy muscles, which is why so many athletes enjoy a session after a tough workout. The Finnish Olympic team doesn't go anywhere without their portable saunas!

Enjoying a Finnish sauna can also help beautify the skin. Circulation to the skin's surface is improved, dirt and grime is washed away, and the pores are tightened. The result is a fresh and youthful look that's second to none. Even pesky cellulite can be reduced with sauna use. Although pregnant women in the United States are told not to use a sauna, you can find residents of Finland who were born in one!

For an authentic Finnish sauna experience in your very own home, there are pre-fabricated saunas, sauna kits and portable saunas offered from well-known manufacturers like Saunafin and Nordic Sauna. The cost of your sauna will depend on what kind of model you choose. Small portable saunas start at a few hundred dollars, while larger sauna rooms can cost more than $5,000.
