The Benefits of a Home Sauna
![]() |
For ages, people have used saunas for a variety of therapeutic purposes. In the past, you had to go to a health club to enjoy a sauna. Only the fabulously wealthy had the luxury of the home sauna. These days, it's easy and affordable for most any homeowner to build their very own home sauna to enjoy. With the wide range of options out there, you're sure to find something to suit your budget and needs.
The physical and mental benefits of sauna use have been celebrated for years. The heat provided by a sauna raises the body's temperature, which simulates the effects of a fever. While many people associate fevers with being sick, it's important to understand that fevers work to rid the body of illness. Also, the heat of a sauna causes profuse sweating. This purifies the body of toxins and improves blood circulation to the skin. As a result, pores are tightened and the skin gains a clean, healthy glow. The appearance of cellulite is reduced, and calories are burned.
It's estimated that a short time spent lounging in a sauna can burn up to 300 calories. If you're carrying excess water weight or experiencing bloating, a sauna session helps your body flush it away. Not only that, but if you've been working out and have sore muscles, the soothing heat can help relieve discomfort. This is why so many athletes indulge in a session following a tough workout.
There are sauna kits available that come with everything you need to build your very own home sauna. These kits include the wood, moldings, nails, heating element and more. It takes about two or three days to build a home sauna from one of these kits. If that's too labor-intensive for your taste, you can try a pre-fabricated sauna room, which can be erected in a matter of hours.
When choosing materials for your home sauna, go for cedar wood. Cedar not only releases a wonderful scent, it shrinks and expands to accommodate changing temperatures and excessive moisture. With cedar, you don't have to worry about cracks or damage as you may with other types of wood.
The expense and work involved in building a home sauna definitely pays off. Once you experience that first session in your sauna, you'll be hooked for a lifetime!
