What to Expect in the Sauna

Sauna use is a national tradition in Finland and is also popular in many other areas of the world, including the United States. Fitness centers, health clubs and day spas most always feature steam or dry saunas for members to use. Some people have saunas in their homes, and with all the options out there, it's easier than ever. If you've never tried this experience before, here's what to expect in the sauna.

There are many different kinds of saunas, including wet saunas, steam saunas, dry saunas, smoke saunas, and even modern infrared heat saunas. The first thing you'll notice about any sauna is the heat. The average temperature in a sauna ranges from around 70 to 100 degrees. Most people sit in a sauna for about five to twenty minutes. If you're brand new to the experience, go for five minutes first and work your way up.

The heat in a sauna raises the body's temperature and simulates a feverish condition. Because fevers work to purge the body of illness, this can be an effective way to rev up the body's disease fighting processes. Perspiration is also produced by the body due to the heat of the sauna. Sweating flushes impurities out of the body and offers a fantastic cleansing effect. The skin glows with renewed vitality, and any excess water weight you're holding on to is melted away. Because of the increased heart rate, body temperature and perspiration, a short sauna session can burn off a few hundred calories!

Many people find spending time in the sauna is good for the mind as well as the body. As you luxuriate in the soothing warmth, let the tension and stress of your day evaporate. Breathe deeply and allow the warmth and moisture to nourish your nasal passages and throat. If you have sore muscles from working out or pain due to conditions like arthritis, you'll find that the penetrating heat does a great job of relieving discomfort.

Although most every healthy adult can safely partake in sauna use, you should always check with your doctor before deciding to indulge. Because the temperature variances can cause blood pressure to spike and/or drop, people with high or low blood pressure may be discouraged from spending time in the sauna. Also, pregnant women are almost always told not to use a sauna. Once your doctor gives you the thumbs-up, get ready to enjoy one of the most therapeutic and relaxing experiences you've ever had!
