The Sauna Family -- A Finland Tradition

In Finland, there are approximately five million people. What's remarkable about this country is that there are also two million home saunas. This means that practically every home, whether it is a large, sprawling mansion or tiny apartment -- has a sauna. Sauna family traditions have existed for ages in this country. There are even Finnish people who've been birthed in a sauna! Why is the sauna so popular in this country? Well, there are a multitude of reasons why so many people, both in Finland and around the world, enjoy spending time in a sauna.

There are many different types of saunas. They include steam saunas, dry saunas, wet saunas, smoke saunas and even infrared heat saunas. These days, especially in the United States, you'll find mostly dry, wet, steam and infrared saunas. Smoke saunas do exist but just aren't as popular, after all, who wants to sit in a smoky room? The celebrated health benefits of sauna use are numerous.

The intense heat of a sauna raises the heart rate and body temperature. This simulates a sort of fever state -- where the body's disease fighting reserves are kicked into hyperdrive. This is why so many Finnish people will tell you that a sauna session will cure most anything. While that's certainly debatable, some other benefits are not. The perspiration produced by the heat flushes toxins from the bloodstream and imparts a full-body cleansing effect. The skin is rejuvenated and refreshed, and the muscles are relaxed and soothed.

Many professional athletes, including the Finnish Olympic team, indulge in sauna use before and after athletic activity. The warmth loosens up the muscles, melts away tension and strain, and helps prevent injury. Many people suffering from arthritis or conditions like fibromyalgia find that time in the sauna helps relieve their pain and discomfort. Not only that, but a few minutes spent relaxing in the comforting warmth can relieve mental stress and anxiety.

If you're ready to become a sauna family, there are many ways to do so. There are portable saunas, pre-fabricated saunas and sauna kits which allow most anyone to have a sauna in their home. Make sure to check with your doctor before using a sauna. Children, pregnant women, and those with high blood pressure are usually discouraged from using a sauna.
